Title: Spectroscopy of Na-28: Shell evolution toward the drip line

Abstract: In the Island of Inversion a coexistence of low-lying states with different shapes results from the relatively small energy gap between normal spherical sd configurations and deformed intruder fp configurations arising from excitations beyond the N = 20 shell gap. In the odd-odd nuclei the coupling of protons in the d5/2 orbital with the neutrons in d3/2 will lead to positive parity states, while coupling to the intruder pf orbitals results in negative parity states. 28Na has been studied using beta-decay at GANIL as well as in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy at NSCL. Candidates for the positive and negative parity multiplets have been identified by combining the results of both experiments. Their excitation energies indicate an evolution of effective interactions and single-particle levels when going from 30Al down to 25O.
In the talk I will present this combined experimental and theoretical study of shell evolution along a chain of isotones from stability toward the drip line and related studies in this region.
