Title: Steering TITAN: Recent milestones and a roadmap

Abstract: A fundamental quantity, mass provides deep insight into the system it characterizes and summarizes all interactions among the constituent particles. Atomic mass, for example, lifts the lid on nuclear structure, indicates nucleosynthetic pathways, and provide vital clues about fundamental interactions. This information drives the need for precise and accurate mass determinations, which led to the introduction of ion trapping into experimental nuclear physics in the 1990s. Twenty years later, rare-isotope-beam (RIB) facilities appear saturated with Penning trap mass spectrometers (PTMS). The youngest, TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science (TITAN), catapulted to international recognition in 2008 for mass measurements of halo nuclides. These measurements and those of very short-lived species cemented TITAN's reputation as a premier PTMS. The collaboration has continued its success by focusing largely on leveraging the facility's unique features, especially charge breeding of RIB. Charge breeding of RIB in an EBIT has permitted certain breakthroughs, leading to noteworthy mass determinations. Moreover, the EBIT has allowed a less well-known program for in-trap decay spectroscopy. I will evaluate recent scientific and technical progress at TITAN, discuss challenges to keep the facility cutting edge, and provide perspective for ion trapping in the nuclear-physics community.

The seminar will be streamed and recorded, please contact Niki Martin for details.
