Title: Introduction to Iterative Learning Control
Abstract: There are two main types of control: (1) internal feed-back (FB), and (2) external feed-forward FF). Control is applied to some machinery or device called the "plant". Typically, when desired performance of the plant cannot be achieved with FB alone, the control is supplemented by FF.
Hence arises the question: what should be the FF signal? Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is a method to find the FF signal for a repetitive operation (or to reject a periodic disturbance)
from the plant response to a series of trials. The method was introduced in the mid 1990s in the
field of robotics, and has become widespread in industry for robots performing assembly tasks.
Despite 20 years activity, there are still open questions about the stability of ILC: do the iterations converge on a solution? This talk will cover the simplest types of ILC, and then employ them to the task of finding a compensation for the periodic beam loading of the ARIEL e-linac - as occurs during operation with pulsed electron beams with high peak current. The talk will explain and solve the problem of "bad learning transients".
