Title: A study of mercurial isotopes: ion source developments, a cessation of odd-even shape staggering and a characteristic kink

Abstract: A study of mercurial isotopes: ion source developments, a cessation of odd-even shape staggering and a characteristic kink
T. Day Goodacre (on behalf of the Windmill-ISOLTRAP-RILIS collaboration)

This seminar will present both the developments for, and the results of, an experiment that investigated the mean square charge radii of mercury isotopes: from 177Hg below the N=104 mid-shell to 208Hg above the N=126 shell closure [1].
A sudden onset of shape staggering and deformation in the chain of the mercury isotopes was revealed by optical pumping and laser spectroscopy experiments in the 1970s and 80s [2,3]. Open questions remained however, with the cessation point of the pronounced odd-even shape staggering and the behaviour of the isotopes at the crossing of the N=126 shell closure yet to be determined.
In an attempt to answer these questions, a new ion source concept [4] enabling the coupling of the ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) with molten metal targets and a new RILIS “ionization scheme” [5] with a factor of 60 increase in efficiency were developed. The application of these techniques, within the established Windmill-ISOLTRAP-RILIS collaboration, unambiguously demonstrated that the cessation of shape staggering occurs at 180Hg and revealed the characteristic kink at the crossing of N=126.
