Title: First Results from DEAP-3600 and Search for Dark Matter with Liquid Argon Detectors

Abstract: Although the existence of Dark Matter is well established based on astronomical observations, its nature is still one of the most pressing and exciting questions in physics, with Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) remaining the top Dark Matter candidate.
I will present the first results from the DEAP-3600 detector located 2 km underground at SNOLAB, which searches for dark matter particle interactions with 3 tonnes of liquid argon (LAr) contained in an ultrapure acrylic vessel viewed by 255 photomultiplier tubes. DEAP-3600 has recently delivered the best WIMP-nucleon cross section limit in LAr and aims to reach a competitive overall sensitivity (or discover WIMPs) after 3 years of running.
While DEAP-3600 continues taking data, a global collaboration including scientists from DarkSide, DEAP, ArDM and MiniCLEAN has formed to build DarkSide-20k (a larger 20 tonne detector) within the next 4 years, and in the future a multi-hundred tonne scale instrument, capable of reaching the ultimate sensitivity available to WIMP searches. I will discuss R&D on maximizing light collection/detection and on minimizing backgrounds. It is essential for achieving this goal and has much broader applications.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
