Title: Overview of recent target and ion source developments at ISOLDE-CERN

Abstract: ISOL facilities, such as ISOLDE at CERN and ISAC and the future ARIEL at TRIUMF, have the purpose of producing radioactive ion beams for physics research. As physics experiments demand shorter and shorter-lived isotopes (with half-lives down to a few milliseconds), the target and ion-source systems (TISS) must be very efficient in the production and extraction of those beams. Current TISS developments are also focused on the extraction of new beam elements, such as the refractory ones, through novel techniques.

Usually in the ISOL method the most critical processes, the ones with higher losses are production, diffusion, evaporation and transport of the isotope in the vacuum (through material porosity or other target structures) and ionization. In this talk, recent developments in each of these steps will be presented. Among others, developments will be detailed on the proton to neutron converter, nano and submicron materials, nanocomposites, molecular beams, electron impact, laser and negative ion sources.
