Date/Time: Tue 2018-04-03 at 10:00

Location: Auditorium

Speaker: Akira Miyazaki (CERN)

Title: Engineering challenges in microwave and RF technology for accelerators

Abstract: Several overcome challenges in microwave and Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) technology are presented. The seminar is divided into two parts.
In the former part, high-frequency and high-power microwave technology for particle physics application is discussed. A microwave vacuum tube called gyrotron of 200GHz and over 100W was developed. The challenges were basically how to apply this monster machine for precise science.
Also, a Fabry-Perot resonator dedicated to this frequency range is developed, where conventional mirrors for optical light are not available. A lot of big challenges were overcome, and eventually resulted in the first direct measurement of positronium hyperfine structure.

In the latter part, an SRF project for heavy ions at CERN, HIE-ISOLDE, is explained. Here, the challenges are associated with our mission to provide promising beam for users in due time. Some of the problems, overlooked in the design and R&D phases but revealed during commissioning and operation, are shown and practical solutions are provided. They cover different aspects of a SRF accelerator: coupler, tuner and microphonics, phenomenon during cool-down of cavities, and new cavity design and evaluation including beam dynamics. All the problems were solved or mitigated, and achieved successful physics run for three years. This will give us good lessons for the future or ongoing projects as well.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
