Title: High-Power Beams: Physics across Boundaries
Abstract: This seminar will start with an emphasis on the importance of treating space-charge problems self-consistently. It will be followed by an introduction to three self-consistent approaches of increasing complexity: Sacherer's envelope theory, conventional particle-in-cell and symplectic particle-in-cell. The application of these approaches will be discussed in the context of TRIUMF accelerators. Through this study it will become apparent that progress in accelerator physics is interwoven with developments in other fields of research, such as plasma physics, astronomy, and weather forecast. To further illustrate this point, I will try to solve a non-accelerator physics problem using an accelerator physics solution. This will be done by showing how the problem of electron to photon conversion from a high-power electron beam can be addressed using a thin target placed inside a cyclotron-like ring.
