Title: The LHC Beam Dump System: Status and Challenges for HL-LHC

Abstract: The LHC Beam Dump System (LBDS) is one of the most critical systems for reliable and safe operation of the LHC. For each beam, it includes the dump core and shielding, 15 fast extraction magnets, 15 magnetic septa and 10 dilution kickers, together with the various control system elements. Its fail-safe design must ensure the LBDS performance also for abnormal operation such as asynchronous beam dumps or failing dilution kicker. The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project will increase the total beam intensity in the ring by nearly a factor of two, resulting in a correspondingly higher energy deposition in the dump core and on the protection elements in the ring. This talk will give an overview of the current LBDS, discuss the challenges and present possible upgrade measures.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
