Title: Controlling Particulates and Dust in Vacuum Systems

Abstract:

Particulates like atmospheric dust can cause damage to sensitive particle accelerator equipment. A well-known example are superconducting accelerating cavities where particulate contamination can lead to field emission which might reduce the accelerating gradient and could cause enhanced radiation fields.

In this talk the basic properties of particulates leading to contamination will be reviewed.
Methods to reduce particulate contamination in accelerator components will be discussed. This includes implications for the mechanical design, the cleaning procedures as well as the installation into the accelerator housing.

As practical examples some concepts developed for the European XFEL will be presented.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
