Title: Physics with the Active Target Time Projection Chamber

Abstract: In this talk I will present a novel approach to performing low energy nuclear physics experiments in which luminosity and resolution are paramount. In the era of radioactive beams, many experiments using low energy reactions are challenged by the low intensity of the beams as well as the low energy of the recoils due to the inverse kinematics. Experimenters are often drawn to compromise resolution at the expense of luminosity, limiting both the reach and the quality of the scientific output. An elegant solution to this conundrum can be found in Active Target detectors, that are currently under active development around the world. I will present the first results obtained with the Active Target Time Projection Chamber (AT-TPC) used to revive proton resonant scattering on radioactive nuclei in inverse kinematics. These reactions can be used to extract spectroscopic information on neutron-rich nuclei by populating analog states in the proton+nucleus system. The first results obtained at the NSCL were aimed at probing the robustness of the N=28 shell closure in Ar47. The outcome of this commissioning experiment is ushering a new program for the spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei far from stability. Other results obtained on alpha clustering in light neutron-rich nuclei will also be presented, as well as the prospects of several new opportunities opened by this new experimental method.
