Title: Gravitational Waves and the LIGO-Virgo Third Observation Run

Abstract: On 1 April 2019, LIGO and Virgo detectors embarked on a third observation run ('O3'), searching for gravitational waves from astrophysical sources. Slated for a duration of one year, the run features public alerts of gravitational wave triggers, in which electromagnetic astronomers, neutrino detectors, and the general public can receive automated GCN (Gamma-ray Coordinates Network) alerts notifying of high-quality triggers in the LIGO/Virgo data. To date, 14 alerts have been produced, potential binary black hole mergers, binary neutron star mergers, and the possible weak signature of a black hole-neutron star coalescence, corresponding to a trigger roughly every 5 days. In this talk we review LIGO detector improvements leading to the latest observation run, discuss O3, and close with the near term upgrades for O4 and O5 runs.
