Title: Neutron Flux Monitoring of Candu Reactors

Abstract: CANDU is considered one of Canada's 10 top engineering achievements of the past century. CANDU power reactors (19 of them in Canada) produce more than 16% of the country's total electric energy generation.

The range of neutron flux in a CANDU reactor spans numerous decades. Flux in a fresh core prior to first criticality is approximately 10^14 times lower than flux in an equilibrium core at full power. For control of reactor power and for reactor protection, the neutron flux shall be continuously monitored when fuel is present in reactor. Because of this large neutron flux range, different types of instruments are required depending on the power level.

This talk will have a brief introduction to the CANDU technology and focus on applications of various neutron monitoring devices, including start-up instrumentation (SUI), ion chamber (IC), in-core self-powered neutron detector (SPND) and travelling flux detector (TFD) in CANDU reactors.

Short Biography:

Jingliang got his PhD in the field of experimental high energy particle physics in China. He worked in TRIUMF for Rare Kaon Decays (BNL AGS E787 and E949 experiments) and for Muon Decay analysis with TWIST Group between 2001 and 2006. Later he joined AECL (now Candu Energy Inc.) in Mississauga, Ontario, working on nuclear reactor core physics mainly to support the operating CANDU reactors all over the world.
