Title: Optical clocks and frequency metrology using highly charged ions

Abstract: Recently, sympathetic cooling and Coulomb crystallization of highly charged ions (HCI) have been demonstrated at MPIK. This has very quickly enabled the realization of quantum logic spectroscopy with HCI and the use of their forbidden optical transitions for frequency metrology with fifteen digits accuracy at PTB Braunschweig. A very interesting issue among several fundamental physics applications is the investigation of a possible time variation of the fine-structure constant with HCI, which can have exceedingly large sensitivities to this parameter. Furthermore, the development of a vacuum-ultraviolet frequency comb for its use with HCI will be discussed.
