Title: The Proton Target Facility in MYRRHA phase 1

Abstract: The Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK•CEN) is actively working on designing and building a multifunctional research installation in Mol: MYRRHA. MYRRHA is conceived as an Accelerator Driven System (ADS) coupling a linear accelerator (linac) to a sub-critical reactor including a spallation target. The development of MYRRHA-ADS and its powerful linac allowed elaborating the idea of a high-power ISOL facility capable to operate in parallel to the reactor and making use of the same proton accelerator. The concept of the facility was worked out in the period 2012-2014.

A phased implementation of the MYRRHA project was developed in 2015 and the funding for phase 1 was decided by the Belgian government in September 2018. In this phase, the first part of the linac will be constructed, providing 100 MeV proton beams to a couple of target stations and a high-power beam dump used for testing the requested high reliability of the accelerator. One of these target stations contains an ISOL system and will be implemented at Proton Target Facility (PTF). An irradiation facility of interest for the fusion-materials community will also be implemented in this first phase of MYRRHA.

The presentation will focus on the Proton Target Facility project providing the status of the current advancement in the facility’s conceptual design and its technical challenges.
