Title: IsoSiM Student Seminars: "Charge Breeding at TRIUMF using the Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source"

Abstract: In a rare isotopes production and acceleration facility, charge breeding of the exotic isotopes is required to make the linear accelerators (LINAC) used for post acceleration more compact and cost-efficient. This occurs if the charge state is Q+ instead of 1+. In addition to matching the injection energy and mass to charge ratio of the LINAC through charge breeding, beam purification can also be achieved when the rare isotopes are extracted from the charge breeder based on their mass to charge ratio, A/q.
In the ISAC facility of TRIUMF, charge breeding of radioactive isotopes is based on an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS). Although charge breeding can also be achieved with Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) but ECRIS was chosen mainly because it supports ISAC's continuous beam operation. To improve the efficiency of the ECRIS charge breeder, a two-frequency heating and frequency tuning technique of the source plasma is being implemented. Furthermore, the extraction system of the breeder has been simulated for the first time to explore the dependence of beam emittance on plasma and extraction parameters.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
