Title: Electric dipole moment searches using atoms, neutrons and molecules: State of the art and new directions with rare isotopes

Abstract: The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics provides an almost complete and
remarkably accurate description of fundamental particles and interactions.
However, physics beyond the SM (or "new physics") are required to address yet
unresolved puzzles like the nature of dark matter or the tremendous excess of
matter over antimatter observed in our Universe. Signatures of new physics have
yet to be found at the high energy frontier, strongly encouraging efforts in the
field of low energy, high precision measurements, with a projected physics reach
well beyond energies available in particle accelerators.*****************

Searches for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles,
atoms and molecules provide sensitive low energy probes to test fundamental
symmetries and potentially identify new physics. A non-zero EDM is a direct
manifestation of time-reversal (T) violation, and equivalently CP violation;
where CP is the combined operation of charge-conjugation (C) and parity
inversion (P). EDM searches employ challenging experimental techniques, e.g.
high performance magnetic shielding, sensitive magnetometry and precise
manipulation of spin states. Measurement sensitivity is largely driven by
coherence times, preparation of high density spin polarized samples and
detailed understanding of systematic effects.**********************

After giving an introduction and overview of EDM searches I will focus on
progress towards a neutron EDM measurement at TRIUMF (TUCAN EDM) and the HeXeEDM
experiment, which recently resulted in a new limit on the EDM of the isotope
129-xenon. I will conclude discussing new directions for fundamental symmetry
tests based on rare isotopes, taking advantage of strong internal enhancement
effects in heavy nuclei.
