Title: Searching for new physics with ATLAS in the dilepton spectrum and beyond: latest implications and outlook for future LHC runs
Abstract: Having enabled discoveries of Standard Model resonances in the past half-century, leptonic final states remain a vital testing ground for new physics at the current high energy frontier. At the LHC, high-momentum electrons and muons are well resolved against the hadronically-dominated backdrop of proton collisions. In particular the dilepton invariant mass spectrum is a clean experimental probe of multiple scenarios beyond the Standard Model (SM) including E6 Grand Unified Theories, quark and lepton compositeness, the Randall-Sundrum graviton, and generic Dark Matter mediators. However, searches for these signatures at the far kinematic reaches of the LHC also encounter unique challenges from both detector limitations and theoretical handles on SM backgrounds at large momentum fraction. In this talk I will review the latest searches for new high-mass phenomena in leptonic (especially dilepton) final states recorded by the ATLAS detector, and discuss where the accompanying challenges and implications may be headed toward Run-3 of the LHC and beyond.
