Many thanks to Byron for answering my question... editing an existing
metafont file to remove one extra orbit should be much, much easier than
writing it from scratch!

Go to the directory:
/triumfcs/linux/tex/texmf.local/fonts
Then the four sub-directories:
./pk/cx/public/local/tlogo.300pk
./pk/ljfour/public/local/tlogo.600pk
./source/public/local/tlogo.mf
./tfm/public/local/tlogo.tfm
