Start-up of ISAC-II in the spring

Dear TRIUMF Users, Experimenters, Operators and Staff,

Please take note of the following information regarding updates on the
status of M11 and ISAC-II.

A) Due to the preparatory work for the installation of the ultra cold
neutron (UCN) source in the Meson Hall, no beam time will be available
in 2013 on M13 or M11. While the M13 channel has to be dismantled and
will be decommissioned the layout of the UCN beam line and source has
been planned in such a way that future operation of M11 will be possible
after a reconfiguration of the channel at the last bender. The current
plan is to carry out the clean-up work in the area and the
reconfiguration of M11 during 2013 such that detector tests will can be
carried out again starting in 2014.

B) Due to a site wide power outage on March 2nd we will not be able to
cool down the ISAC-II superconducting accelerator until after this power
outage. There is also an issue with the vacuum of the SCC3 cryomodule.
If this issue can be resolved without removing SCC3 we anticipate being
ready for beam approximately April 22nd. If a removal of SSC3 for an
emergency repair will be necessary, we will not be ready for beam with
ISAC-II until about May 7th.

We will take this uncertainty into account in our beam schedule.

Sincerely,

Reiner Kruecken
Science Division Head
