Dear TRIUMF Users, Experimenters, Operators and Staff,
This is an update on the Target Module 3 (TM3) and FEBIAD ion source
operation situation, currently scheduled to start online operation on
October 9th.
Although the fabrication and installation of the new source tray for TM3
was successfully completed on schedule, tests last week revealed that
some electrical issues remain which appear to be located in the service
chase of the module, and which are currently being tested before the
module is considered to be operational again. These tests will be
completed by Wednesday, October 2nd and a decision about the operation
will be made on Thursday, October 3rd.
In parallel, we are proceeding to repair the damaged TM4 unit and
preparing for operation with a high power (HP) tantalum target. The
repair is difficult, as this has to be done completely using remote
handling tools and procedures.
However, please note, that when TM3 with FEBIAD ion source is considered
operational, its startup will be delayed from the currently scheduled
start date of October 9th by about 4 days (ie. ~October 13th) (more
details will be available on Thursday).
To compensate for the delayed start, we will extend the current UCx run
by about 4 days and allow for discretionary experiments and beam
developments.
Here are the two scenarios we are currently considering:
1) In the case of successful TM3 tests, we will proceed with the
following plan:
TM3 NiO FEBIAD
TM4 HP Ta SIS/LIS
TM4 UCx IG-LIS
There will be an 8-day gap in between the last two target operations.
2) In the case of unsuccessful TM3 tests, we will proceed with the
following plan, no FEBIAD target and only two target operations for the
remainder of Schedule 125:
TM4 HP Ta SIS/LIS
TM4 UCx IG-LIS
There will be an 8-day gap in between the two target operations.
I thank you for your understanding and patience and if you have any
questions or comments please feel free to contact me
Jens Dilling
