If you are unable to make this workshop or have any questions, comments, suggestions or ideas that you wish to share, the TRIUMF Users Group wants to hear from you! TUG is soliciting any and all input from our users towards ISAC planning and strategy that you would like to share with us and with management (confidentially). You can email them at tug at triumf.ca<mailto:tug at triumf.ca>.

A few questions you could consider before the workshop are: What part of operations is crucial for your research programs? How would you prioritize between (i) getting target voltages back up to 60 kV, (ii) increasing beam development time (more RIBs), (iii) increasing reliability of existing RIBs and delivery (infrastructure and refurbishment projects), and (iv) increasing the overall number of shifts (ARIEL and parallel operations).

What bottlenecks have you experienced and what ideas do you have to alleviate them? What part of the planning process should be more transparent or flexible? How far in advance should planning be decided? How is your science impacted by an extended shutdown compared to a less dense but more reliable operational schedule (as proposed for 2020)? How much risk can your research programs tolerate in a beam schedule? How could TRIUMF better balance risk and scientific output in the schedule? How do these strategy and planning decisions impact students and postdocs? There are of course many other questions, which is why your feedback and your participation in this workshop is so important.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Regards,

Jens Dilling and Oliver Kester

Subject: ISAC Strategy Workshop

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

TRIUMF is organizing an open workshop on ISAC strategies for target modules and related operation improvements. The workshop is planned for Nov 8th, 2019 as a full day workshop (in the TRIUMF auditorium) with the opportunity to participate in person here at TRIUMF, or via remote access (tentatively via Blue Jeans). It is open and free for everybody in the community.

Following the TRIUMF User Group Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year during TRIUMF's Science Week 2019, we had discussions at TRIUMF about Target Module (TM) strategies (as presented during the talks there), new developments, and alternative and additional ways to improve beam delivery for the users at ISAC. One outcome of this discussion is that we are organizing this open workshop on TMs and the above topics, including improved low-energy beam transport, beam developments, etc. The new concepts will be discussed and we also plan to invite some subject matter experts to get detailed feedback.

The workshop will also provide opportunities for the Physical Sciences Division and the Accelerator Division to present details on past performances, like the number of delivered shifts/hours, the number of completed/scheduled experiments, etc., but also the number of experiments (shifts) on the books that require certain conditions (like TM high voltage), etc. In addition, we will provide an opportunity to look at details of the so-called strawman schedule for next year (2020), and discuss alternatives. In general, there will be ample opportunities for discussions.

We have reached out to the TRIUMF User Group who are supporting this workshop and who will help facilitate questions and comments from the community.

To register to attend in person or to participate remotely, please send an e-mail to sciencediv at triumf.ca<mailto:sciencediv at triumf.ca>.

Thank you. We are looking forward to having you here and the discussions that will follow.
