Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Mark your calendar for TRIUMF's Science Week 2020, August 17-21, 2020.
Over the last few years we have celebrated two historic milestones - 50 years of TRIUMF in 2018 and 20 years of ISAC in 2019.
This year we are organizing Science Week in the context of developing a long-range, 20-year vision for TRIUMF.
This is timely for several reasons:
1) The Government of Canada's funding of TRIUMF's core operational budget for 2020-2025 directs $25M towards infrastructure improvements. Together with investments into the major platforms ARIEL and IAMI, this provides the foundation for the long-term future of the lab.
2) The Canadian subatomic physics community is about to start creating the Canadian Subatomic Physics Long-Range Plan 2022-2026, which will look forward 15 years to 2036. In the US, the Snowmass 2021 process is under way, while Europe is completing the 2020 European Particle Physics Strategy. We need to position TRIUMF's science program and facility development strategy in this global context.
3) The 2018 NRC Evaluation of TRIUMF and its International Peer Review Committee explicitly recommended that "TRIUMF should expand their long-range vision and planning to at least twenty years." We have taken this recommendation to heart and will be working with our stakeholder community to develop this long-range vision.
Details about programming and registration of Science Week 2020, as well as the process for developing the overall 20-year vision will soon follow.
I look forward to welcoming you all to TRIUMF in mid-August for a week of activities and discussions about the long-term vision for our laboratory!
