Subject: Geant4 Advanced Course 2025 @ CERN
Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2025 10:18:40 +0000
From: Gabriele Cosmo <Gabriele.Cosmo at cern.ch>
To: geant4-announce (Geant4 announcements) <geant4-announce at cern.ch>
The CERN Geant4 team in EP/SFT is pleased to announce that the
2025 Geant4 Advanced Course at CERN will be held from 3-7 November 2025
at the Training Amphitheatre in the CERN Meyrin site:
https://indico.cern.ch/e/geant4_advanced_course_2025
The course format is based on lectures, which will span five afternoons.
The lecturers are Geant4 developers who created and maintain the
corresponding parts of the toolkit.
The course will cover all key aspects of using the Geant4 toolkit in for
any type of applications, including: - how to create complex geometry setups, and tips for creating
complicated shapes (solids);
- how to describe electromagnetic and other fields and adjust the
accuracy of tracking particles in them;
- how to extract energy deposition and other observables in multiple ways;
- how to speed up simulation though use of cuts (secondary thresholds);
- exploring the use ‘event-biasing’ to suppress less important tracks
(for appropriate applications);
- using ‘fast’ parameterisations (traditional or ML) in selected potions
of a setup;
- adapting an applications for multi-threading;
- how to customise the user interface and create custom commands to
configure your application.
The course will also cover the physics capabilities and options of Geant4,
to enable you to
- gain a first understanding of the physics model available (and their
strengths and relative performance costs)
- understand the physics configuration options (key physics lists and
their variants)
- navigate the process of choosing an appropriate physics list, and how
to validate it (or find existing validation)
- identify alternative physics configurations (physics lists or parameter
variation) for systematic studies.
Extra emphasis will be paid to aspects most relevant to HEP and Nuclear
Physics experiments, but most of the topics covered will be relevant for
diverse application areas.
Places for in person participation will be limited to 30. Some are
reserved for CERN participants; the rest will be available on a first
come, first serve basis.
Online participation (via Zoom) is also available.
The cost to attend the course (for those involved in CERN or other HEP
experiments or projects) are:
- via videoconference: 50 Swiss Francs (CHF) for those employed
and 25 CHF for students;
- in person (limitted to 30) is 125 Swiss Francs (CHF) for employed
and 100 CHF for students.
Registration is required.
Best Regards,
Gabriele Cosmo, John Apostolakis
