Hi GAPS Community,
Please see the announcement below about the launch of the TRIUMF Early Career Researcher Mentorship Program, along with the application forms. This is a program created for GAPS members, by GAPS members. It is based on making new connections at TRIUMF, features minimal commitment beyond 3 – 6 mentor/mentee meetings over the course of 7 months, and each meeting includes funding for a $50 lunch (or coffee break)!
The Academic Mentee program is built for GAPS members looking to expand their network. The Peer Mentee program is built for undergraduates and graduate students who are new to TRIUMF/Vancouver. GAPS members who have been at TRIUMF for at least a year are also encouraged to apply to be Peer Mentors. One can be both a Peer Mentor and an Academic Mentee (which would lead to 2 separate pairings).
You can also still join the program even If you participated in the mentorship program last year. The program coordinators will ensure that you are paired with someone new, and there are additional options for mentor/mentee selection criteria in the application form.
Please reach out to Ben Davis-Purcell or Gabby Gelinas if you have any questions.

Dear TRIUMF community,
We are excited to announce the launch of the Early Career Researchers (ECR) Mentorship Program at TRIUMF! The goal of this 8-month program is to support and enhance personal and professional development for TRIUMF’s undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. In addition, this program aims to give participants a safe space for constructive, unbiased discussions around career growth, institutional and STEM ecosystem knowledge sharing, and more. This is done by creating one-to-one matches of mentee applicants and mentor applicants, prioritizing matches outside of one’s usual work at TRIUMF. The application deadline for both mentors and mentees is October 3.
The Early Career Researchers Mentorship Program is a two-stream initiative designed by and for students and postdoctoral fellows.
• The Peer Mentorship stream aims to establish connections that support and foster positive day-to-day work and life experiences at TRIUMF by connecting new ECR members of the community with senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Peer mentors help their mentee navigate a new research environment and help provide an avenue for community building.
• The Academic Mentorship stream aims to build relationships between ECRs and more senior members of our organization to promote learning new skills and increasing networking opportunities.
Students and postdoctoral fellows can choose to participate as a mentee in either or both program streams. In both streams of the program, mentor/mentee pairs will be expected to host three to six open-format discussions, centered around the mentee’s goals for the program. To facilitate these meetings, a meal allowance will be provided for each meeting.
Become a mentee! If you are interested in participating as a mentee for one or both streams, submit your application here: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EDUFwrOceUai049ELgO1h_aegJ6WV_FLo5fK5JCgzEdURVEyTzE5Vk1YUUxMS1BJSUpYVEFTNjhPRi4u
Become a peer mentor! If you are a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow who has been at TRIUMF for at least one year, consider becoming a peer mentor! Peer mentors help new students settle in, learn about and integrate within the lab’s culture and community, and serve as students’ first point of contact for questions related to processes, community, and day-to-day life at TRIUMF. Suggested discussion topics are included in the application form. If you want to become a peer mentor, submit your application here: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EDUFwrOceUai049ELgO1h_aegJ6WV_FLo5fK5JCgzEdUQjVURU04N1NPQjZXTktRQU0wVlFXMEFSWi4u
Become an academic mentor! If you are a researcher or senior staff member in the lab, consider becoming an academic mentor! Academic mentors are instrumental in helping students and postdoctoral fellows navigate their career choices, build a professional network and learn new skills. You will be asked to meet with your mentee(s) regularly and offer constructive feedback on any academic challenges they might have. Suggested discussion topics are included in the application form. If you want to become an academic mentor, submit your application here: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EDUFwrOceUai049ELgO1h_aegJ6WV_FLo5fK5JCgzEdUQjVURU04N1NPQjZXTktRQU0wVlFXMEFSWi4u
Selected mentees will be matched with their mentors and notified via email early-mid October. There will be a one-week grace period to acknowledge joining the program and accept your proposed mentor, or request a new mentor if necessary. After mentee approval, selected mentors will be notified of their matches by the end of October. The program will kick off with an orientation session and will continue until the end of April.
We are available to answer any questions you might have as potential mentees or mentors. Let’s enhance our portfolio of student and staff development together, so that everyone is better positioned to succeed in an inclusive and dynamic environment such as ours!
If you have questions, please reach out to Gabby Gelinas, Ben Davis-Purcell, or Monika Stachura via email or Teams.
Regards,
Gabby, Ben, and Monika
