Hi GAPS members!
A quick reminder that GAPS hosts a 30-minute chat with the colloquium speaker after each Thursday TRIUMF colloquium. These take place in the MOB Cafeteria, starting directly after the colloquium. This is a great opportunity for informal chats with the speaker, related to their presentation or anything else you wish to discuss!
Today’s GAPS chat will start at ~15:10 with speaker Mark Boland (U Sask). See below for colloquium details.
See you there!

Title: Particle Accelerators: Engines of Discovery
Speaker: Mark Boland (U Sask)
Date/Time: Thu Oct 08, 2026, at 14:00
Location: Auditorium/Remote
Abstract:
Particle accelerators have been invaluable research tools since they were developed at the start of the modern physics era. They have been instrumental in the development of science in many fields and reportedly contribute to a Nobel Prize in Physics every three years. This seminar will focus on two types of electron accelerators: one for generating synchrotron radiation and another for colliding particles. The basic operational principles and physics required to generate high energy particle beams will be presented. There are over 40,000 particle accelerators in operation in the world, with more being designed and built all the time. Examples at both ends of the scale will be presented: the 15 m WaterFEL Free Electron Laser being built at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the 90.7 km FCC-ee electron-positron collider being designed at CERN, Switzerland. A glimpse at the future direction for particle accelerators will be provided, including the motivation for ever larger accelerators and the possible direction of new technology to achieve the design goals. --- Remote Connection: https://ubc.zoom.us/j/69751353710?pwd=YrwmLCIBnaG7MtOFvRAKu4lE1XsgMG.1
