Hi everyone,
this week, we'll discuss "High precision hyperfine measurements in
Bismuth challenge bound-state strong-field QED"
(https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms15484). These are the questions:
1. Why are heavy nuclei a good testing ground for QED?
2. What is the "specific difference"? Why isn't it sufficient to measure
the hyperfine splitting itself?
3. How are H-like Bi and Li-like Bi produced and excited? What are the
"specialized mirror systems" used to detect the photons?
4. Why are there two bands visible in Fig. 2b?
5. What possible explanations do the authors give for the large
discrepancy between their results and theory?
As usual, we'll meet on Wednesday at 3:30 in the MOB Theory Room and
snacks will be provided.
Cheers,
Matthias
