Hi All
For next week's journal club (Wed 21st) I will be presenting the attached paper about the search for variations in the decay constant.
Some Questions/Discussion Points.
1. What would be the consequences of variations in the decay constant?
2. The activity of the sources is calculated by integrating the full energy spectrum, why measure activity above the full photopeak energy.
3. 40K decays predominately via β- decay to 40Ca without the emission of a γ ray. As the experiment is insensitive to this type of decay can they discount variations in the decay rate.
4. The detector experiences a significant gain shift over the course of the experiment. What could be the cause of this shift?
5. In Fig 7 why is the standard deviation no longer horizontal after 100 days? The same effect is not seen in Fig 4 despite using the same methods.
See you all at 3:30 in the MOB theory room. I assume snacks will be provided.
