Tom Procter, S1552 - Shape evolution across the N = 118 neutron subtle
closure.
The previous laser spectroscopy campaign on francium has been successful
with published results in PRL on the ground states of the 206,205,204
isotopes. The next stage of the project aims to investigate the long-lived
isomeric states present in 206Fr and 204Fr. The groups' aim is to
accurately determine the nuclear spins of the isomeric states, which are
currently tentatively assigned, in order to extract the relevant nuclear
properties. These isomeric states can then be used in explaining shape
evolution around N = 118, where the ground states have been observed to
deviate from single particle behaviour.
The isomeric states in 204,206Fr are estimated to have yields as low as a
few thousand per second, pushing the limits of the current experimental
setup. In order to investigate these cases the laser group has developed
new laser manipulation techniques that have increased the sensitivity of
the experiment. These techniques along with the latest results from the
isomers in 206Fr, which were measured during the run, will be presented.
