Hello all,

In a previous email I stated that Mirko Vorabbi would be giving a talk on data science today, unfortunately this is not the case. Mirko Miorelli will be giving a talk today at 2 PM, but not on data science. Mirko does work currently in data science and has offered to give a talk on data science in the future, but not today.

As some of you heard on the all-hands meeting on Aug 31, the hiring of data scientist is nearly complete, but that they likely won't start for a month, which is a bit longer than I had anticipated. In light of this, I* was thinking we could pick of of the many free online courses in data science/machine learning and we can collectively take the course together, and perhaps take turns teaching a lesson every other week. A few examples of such courses are:

Here is a free online course that follows the graduate-level machine learning course and Columbia University (it follows roughly the same curriculum as the machine learning course at McGill).

https://www.edx.org/course/machine-learning-columbiax-csmm-102x-3

Here is another example, Kaggle. Kaggle is a website that has free lessons and tutorials on data science and related topics, as well as a large variety of competitions, including the AtlasML competition.

If you are interested in choosing one or more of these online classes and taking turns teaching lessons about machine learning, let me know.

*I think it was actually Nir that suggested this to me a few weeks ago.

Sorry for the last-minute confusion.

Cheers,

David Livermore
