MEDIA ADVISORY -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

* TRIUMF Celebrates National Science and Technology Week
with "Science on the World Stage" *

(Vancouver, B.C.) - TRIUMF will open its doors to students and the
public for a special event on Tuesday, October 21, as part of Canada's
National Science and Technology Week (NSTW). NSTW is an annual event
that celebrates science and technology in everyday life. TRIUMF is
holding its "Science on the World Stage" event as part of its
contribution to the week.

For the event, TRIUMF will take part in the global celebration of the
official inauguration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and
host a scientific career panel for university and high school students.
The day will serve the dual purpose of informing the public of the
importance of the LHC while also encouraging students to consider
careers in science.

* Formal inauguration of the LHC *
TRIUMF will host a morning reception beginning at 9 a.m. to celebrate
the official inauguration of the Large Hadron Collider. The event will
include coverage of the inauguration ceremony at CERN from Marcello
Pavan, a Canadian representative for TRIUMF. At TRIUMF, in addition to
observations from invited guests, Isabel Trigger, a research scientist
with TRIUMF and ATLAS-Canada, will deliver a talk about the significance
of the LHC for the future of physics.

* "Choose Your Future" science career panel *
From 12:00-2:00 p.m. TRIUMF will hold a career panel for high school
and university students. The three outstanding scientists, representing
the diverse fields of particle physics (Isabel Trigger from TRIUMF),
fuel cell technology (Lars Rose from the NRC Institute for Fuel-Cell
Innovation), and marine chemistry (Andrew Ross from the Aquatic Chemical
Analysis Laboratory), will discuss the potentials of careers in science.
The panel will be followed by a question and answer period and an
exclusive laboratory and facility tour of the world class TRIUMF
particle accelerator.

For further details on the above events, the LHC project, or to arrange
advance interviews, please contact Tim Meyer, TRIUMF at 604-222-7674 or
via e-mail at communications at triumf.ca.
