> Dear Dept. Heads and Deputies, please could you circulate this amongst your departments.
>
> This is a solicitation for projects and potential supervisors at TRIUMF.
>
> We are moving into the second year of our exchange program with the University of Edinburgh. This year we had two excellent students from them working on projects with Alpha and DRAGON, and this year there are potentially more students available.
>
> How the program works:
> The University of Edinburgh has a 5-year Masters (MPhys) Degree called "Physics with a Year Abroad". Essentially, potential TRIUMF supervisors would get a free* Masters student in the 4th year of their degree to work on a TRIUMF project for up to 12 months. Note that since the UK MPhys degree is continuously evaluated and open to only students of high academic standing, and this particular degree somewhat student-driven, these would be high-quality and self-motivated students.
>
> We would like to provide up to 1-2 project proposals per group/department to bid for these students. Please disseminate this amongst your group/department as you see fit.
>
> The project description (from Edinburgh) is as follows:
> "The Year Abroad will run for students in the 4th year of our five-year MPhys degree programme. During their time abroad students will be expected to carry out a full-year research project, which will be assessed by the local (TRIUMF) supervisor, with input from the course organiser in Edinburgh to standardise marks. Assessment consists of a literature survey related to the project, a final written project report (thesis), an oral presentation and an assessment of their overall performance in the project.
> The student needs a project, a supervisor, somewhere to sit and access to all relevant facilities. The student will also have an Edinburgh supervisor; if there is someone with whom there is an existing working relationship then this will be ideal, otherwise someone will be nominated. The project selection is "student-driven”, i.e. the student makes contact with the proposed supervisor abroad and agrees the project with them, we then find an Edinburgh supervisor to suit.
>
> An academic from Edinburgh would visit sometime in late November/ early December to see how the student is getting on and to discuss the literature review (which will be carried out early in the project to get the student’s feet wet). There is a degree of selection of students before they are admitted onto the year abroad, so that we will only send students that we think are appropriate."
>
>
> We are now soliciting potential supervisors and project ideas for the 2019/2020 academic year. If you or your group wish to be considered, please provide a project description of up to 600 words and send to myself (ruiz at triumf.ca <mailto:ruiz at triumf.ca>) before the deadline of January 7th 2019.
> Thanks,
