Science Talk Abstract:

The nature of dark matter remains one of the largest open questions in particle physics. Despite numerous theories and experimental searches, both small-scale and large-scale, it has so far remained unobserved at the particle level. The DarkLight experiment at the ARIEL electron linear accelerator aims to explore one potential dark sector theory, namely the case where dark matter particles couple to the Standard Model via the kinetic mixing of a new dark sector force carrier and a regular Standard Model photon. Motivated in part by the muon g-2 and X17 anomalies, the experiment aims to probe for a mediator in the 10-20 MeV mass range. As the DarkLight experiment has recently been installed on the eLinac beamline here at TRIUMF, this talk will primarily focus on chronicling the ups and downs of installing a small-scale experiment, as well as current status and future plans.
