[Physical-sciences] PSD Announcement: November Mixer (November14th)

TRIUMF Physical Sciences sciencediv at triumf.ca
Fri Nov 7 14:37:33 PST 2025

Hello, PSD Member!

Delighted to share that our next mixer is this Friday November 14th, at 2:30pm online and in the Auditorium!
The tentative agenda and connection information is below.

In-person attendees: Please pre register your attendance Mixer Attendance - November 14th 2025 – Fill out form<https://forms.office.com/r/YiV9NQUvfg>.
This information helps us with planning future mixers (the food and drink order specifically), and it also satisfies AP’s requirement of listing attendees when I reconcile the catering bill.

Science Talk Abstract;
The identical gravitational behaviour of matter and antimatter is ensured by the weak equivalence principle, a building block of general relativity. However, a direct verification of this equality via the observation of antimatter in a gravitational field is technically challenging. The ALPHA-g experiment at CERN recently made the first measurement of Earth’s gravity on trapped antihydrogen atoms, reporting a downwards acceleration compatible with that of matter. The antihydrogen gravitational acceleration is inferred from the location of the annihilations when anti-atoms are released from the trap. I will present the method and results of this experiment, with a focus on the particle detectors and techniques used to reconstruct the annihilation positions.

Everybody: WE HAVE A SUBSCRIPTION MAILING LIST! Woohoo! If you’re receiving this email, it’s because your email has been added to the list. If you know someone who hasn’t received this email, please send them this link (https://lists.triumf.ca/mailman/listinfo/physical-sciences) so they can subscribe to receive important division updates and other information, but most importantly, notices of our upcoming mixers 😉

If you wish to be removed from the mailing list, no hard feelings – you can do that at the same link above – but I can’t guarantee you won’t miss out 😉

Hope to see you all there!

Thanks,
Lauren
