Hi all,

Reminder for an in-person seminar in an hour! As mentioned earlier this week, GAPS members will have the chance to chat with the speaker after the seminar! Since there are only 30 people allowed in the auditorium, be sure to arrive early to claim your place, or watch on Zoom (below) and then join us in-person at 3pm for the GAPS chat with Wolfram!

Cheers,

GAPS

Title: Recent advances in studies of nuclear shapes: Shape coexistence and shape isomers

Abstract: Atomic nuclei exhibit a variety of shapes from spherical for "magic" nuclei with closed shells of nucleons, to rugby-ball or pear-like shapes when the nucleons fill specific orbitals. Different shapes give rise to different patterns of the excited states of the nucleus, but are also reflected in the decay properties and the response to external electromagnetic fields, which can be studied experimentally through nuclear spectroscopy. For certain combinations of proton and neutron numbers, different shapes are expected at rather low excitation energy in the same nucleus. Changing the shape of a nucleus usually requires the reorganisation of the nucleons, which often leads to long-lived excited states, called shape isomers.

The advent of Radioactive Ion Beams at various energies have opened many new opportunities to search for new shape isomers and to study nuclear shapes by precision measurements of nuclear transition rates and static nuclear moments. This talk will focus on recent key experiments to search for new shape isomers and to study shape coexistence and shape changes in atomic nuclei. Unexpected results have been obtained for certain "mirror" nuclei, in which the number of protons and neutrons is interchanged and which should a priori exhibit almost identical shapes. Another highlight is the observation of a rare electromagnetic decay mode of a shape isomer where two photons are emitted simultaneously by storing them as bare ions in a storage ring.
