Hey GAPS friends!

This week we have two awesome events for you to get involved in! Note that some of the details for Picture a Scientist have changed, but this email is correct!

  1. Picture a Scientist Screening (Wed 1st 5:30 pm) + Panel Discussion (Thurs 2nd 4pm): GAPS is hosting a screening--with the PHAS GSA and E&I commitees--of the awesome and very moving documentary, Picture a Scientist! The screening<https://phas.ubc.ca/picture-scientist-movie-screening> is on Wednesday, Dec 1st, 5.30pm @ HENN201 with FREE PIZZA afterward in HENN 318 for those that want to watch in-person with friends. For those of us who can't make it to the screening, the film is now on Netflix. Note that we need to check vaccination status for this event.
  2. Following the screening, next week's PHAS Department Colloquium<https://phas.ubc.ca/picture-scientist-panel-discussion> (Thursday, Dec 2nd, 4pm @ HENN 201) will be a panel discussion on Picture A Scientist, where you can ask some accomplished women in physics about actions we can take. Currently, our panel consists of the awesome Jess McIver (UBC - gravitational waves), Allison Man (UBC - galaxy evolution), Janis McKenna (UBC - beyond standard model hadronic effects), Aria Malhotra (UBC - radiation therapy), and our very own Beatrice Franke (TRIUMF - Ultra-cold neutron studies)! There will be coffee + cookies as usual, and Zoom connection details can be found via the PHAS event page<https://phas.ubc.ca/picture-scientist-panel-discussion>.
  3. Post-colloquium chat with Wolfram Korten: This week's TRIUMF colloquium<https://www.triumf.ca/research-program/lectures-conferences/upcoming-seminars-lectures?expand=2340> is from Wolfram Korten who's visiting TRIUMF from France. Since it's one of our first in-person colloquia (although very limited seating), GAPS has secured an exclusive chat with the man himself after the colloquium for just grads and postdocs. For those newer GAPS members, when we had in-person colloquia, GAPS would often get 30+ mins to chat with the speaker in a less intimidating environment. So, if you're around, please join us in-person after the colloquium at 3pm, even if you're attending on Zoom!

Happy 2nd last week of term, and see you there!
Your GAPS
