Hi Everyone,

On Monday 14th March at 2.30 - 4.30 PM GAPS will be hosting an exciting Public Engagement and Communication workshop with Miranda Stahn.

Our last workshop with Miranda was great and we are expecting another informative and engaging workshop that will provide a chance to improve all round communication skills in addition to those specifically directed towards the general public. Whether it is an interview for a job in industry, a science fair, a blog post, or a non-technical summary of your thesis work, all of us are likely to have to present our work to a non-science audience at some point and this is a great opportunity to advance some of those non-technical communication skills.

If you plan to attend, please fill out this<https://forms.office.com/r/J5d2ycVQQf> form!

Zoom details will follow closer to the event.

A short description of the workshop and Miranda's bio can be found below.

Public Engagement and Communication workshop

"The workshop will focus on communication and how to connect with non-science audiences - the general public, government, business - and educating participants on writing and speaking for the science communications space/general public, learning tricks to engage the general public in their research. Participants will understand how to translate their academic writing into media forms that resonate with other audiences - blog posts, editorials, science slam performances, etc. - and learn how to adapt their communications to other forms of media as well as where and how to present and distribute original media to engage others in their research.

A final goal of the workshop is to create an outline for an original blog post that could be submitted to a science communications blog such a Science Writers and Communicators of Canada, so participants should have topic in mind with some basic research completed and an idea of why they think the public should care.

Miranda is presently a program coordinator for Genome Alberta and is the founder of Science Networkers - an organization that helps grad students and academics gain valuable insight into non-traditional career paths in science communication, policy and outreach. She has also worked with Sci. Bio to organize professional development focused panels and seminars. "

See you there!

  Your GAPS
