Hi GAPS crew,
It's been a busy week! To cap it off, on Friday, May 5th, Dr. Michelle Kuchera, Associate Professor of Physics and Computer Science at Davidson College, will give a lecture on Introduction to Deep Learning Techniques, including hands-on activities. Think of this more as a professional development workshop where you can apply some of the basic concepts she'll be talking about in her colloquium today. The lecture will start at 9 am and run until ~12pm (including a break). The event will be held in the Main Office Building Auditorium. All are welcome but the lecture is geared towards students and postdocs. Please bring your own laptop for the hands-on activities!
Michelle Kuchera from Davidson College (https://www.davidson.edu/people/michelle-kuchera) is a computational physicist with research interests in machine learning, nuclear physics, and algorithm development for data analysis. The focus of her research is applying these methods to nuclear and particle physics research. She is the co-PI of the Algorithms for Learning in Physics Applications (ALPhA) research group at Davidson College. Her group collaborates with experimental and theoretical physicists at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, and CERN.
Note that because of the workshop, the usual Science Discussion Hour that would have occurred has been cancelled and we'll see you in two weeks. And don't forget to fill in the GAPS Survey<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EDUFwrOceUai049ELgO1h4oizvEkPf5KigaaVMFmCe9UODgxOFNKREZQQVFKVkNHVzFCTVhLMFk1NyQlQCN0PWcu> by tomorrow too!
We hope to see you there!
Your GAPS
