Hi GAPS,

As you know, this week TRIUMF is being visited by Prof. Prajval Shastri. Thus, GAPS and the GAPS EDI sub-committee have organized a special edition of the usual social hour this week! It will take place at the usual time of 2:30pm, however it will be in the MOB Auditorium. Prof. Shastri will give a brief talk at the beginning (see abstract below) and then the usual social hour will commence with some extra ideas to discuss amongst your GAPS peers and with Prof. Shastri. She is also giving a seminar at 11am on Wednesday, and we encourage you to attend that as well 🙂

Degendering Physics Practice: Past Lessons and the Way Forward

Despite the multiple global and local initiatives towards mitigating the gender gap in the sciences during the recent decades, the evidence indicates that we are far from our goal. Part of the reason for slow progress is that, while there is acknowledgement of the gender gap within the scientific enterprise, there is far less acknowledgement of the cause of this gap being discrimination within. There is a need to deepen our understanding of the problem based on the evidence, and have this understanding shape the Interventions going forward. Policy prescriptions need to be crafted at multiple levels, viz., classroom, departmental, institutional, organizational, and also for funding agencies and leadership. Further, I will argue that an intersectionality lens in designing mitigating interventions is necessary in order to degender our physics practice and make our enterprise a truly just and welcoming one for all.

See you tomorrow!

Your GAPS
