Hi all,
Just following up on this - we have a few volunteers (thank you!) but there has been quite a lot of interest from local students this year, so enrolment is high and we could really use more help. This is a fun outreach opportunity where senior high school kids (mostly grades 11 and 12) come and learn a bit about how we analyze subatomic physics data, but it works best if we have enough “real physicists” to help them out when they get stuck and give them an idea of why they are doing what they are doing, which is why we are turning to you for help. If you only have a couple of hours, the part of the day where we really need volunteers is from 11 am to noon (you are then very welcome to stay for lunch with the students, which will be provided). A draft schedule is available at https://indico.triumf.ca/event/527/. We could also use one or two people to help greet the students in the morning and point them in the direction of the auditorium.
If you can spare a couple of hours of Saturday April 27th to hang out with school kids who are interested in physics, and give them a hand and share your enthusiasm, please get in touch. We’ll organize a short tutorial for the volunteers a few days before the event (end of this week or early next week), so you will know what to do - there are some basic instructions at https://cernmasterclass.uio.no/material/InstituteInstructions-Zpath.pdf if you want to take a look.
Many thanks, and hoping to hear from a few more of you,
Isabel

Hello GAPS community,
A fun outreach opportunity full of engagement, food, and extrinsic rewards follows! To participate, please reply here to Isabel to be included upcoming planning sessions.
On behalf of TRIUMF's ATLAS International Masterclass lead, Isabel Trigger, you're invited to participate. This year marks the 10th anniversary of representing BC in this global event, being held in the auditorium on Saturday, April 27th. Along with SFU and UVic locations, this workshop welcomes ~60 secondary school students for a full day of ATLAS data analysis and collaborating video conferences with both CERN and other North American research institutes
Isabel is looking for ~6-8 GAPS volunteers to help administrate and supervise the 25 TRIUMF hosted students. Volunteers do not need to be on ATLAS to introduce the basics of particle detection and navigate cut-based analysis and invariant mass through a fairly easy-to-use GUI. Volunteers will be provided lunch with these students and ATLAS researchers at TRIUMF also attending.
You can read more about the IMC program here, https://www.triumf.ca/home/for-students/high-school-programs/atlas-masterclass
Thanks,
JA
