Hey GAPS Community!

As was announced last week, TRIUMF has developed a new mentorship program aimed at undergrads, grad students, and postdocs. The program connects mentees to mentors through 2 streams:

  * Buddy Stream – mainly for folks who are newer to TRIUMF, where you’ll be connected with an experienced grad student or postdoc at TRIUMF for mostly non-academic advice.
  * Academic Stream – for those looking for career advice, navigating academia, network building, etc. You will be connected with a more senior TRIUMF researcher or staff member.

Both of these streams connect you with a new person at TRIUMF for informal advice over casual meetings, often with lunch/coffee provided by TRIUMF. This is an excellent opportunity to meet someone new and share experiences without already having a defined research working relationship, for example like you do with your supervisor. Mentees and mentors will be matched based on the information provided in the application form. GAPS members are also encouraged to act as mentors for the buddy stream!

Please see the detailed message below for more information and the application forms. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ben or Gabby (in cc) if you have questions. To begin, this is a limited enrolment pilot program that will last for 6 months, so get your applications in by the April 24th deadline!

Subject: [TRIUMF Community Announcements] Early Career Mentorship Program at TRIUMF
Dear TRIUMF community,

We are excited to announce the launch of the Early Career Mentorship Program at TRIUMF! The goal of this 6-month pilot program is to support and enhance personal and professional development for TRIUMF’s undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. In addition, this program aims to give participants a safe space for constructive discussions around career growth, institutional and STEM ecosystem knowledge sharing, and more.
The Early Career Researcher Mentorship Program is a two-stream initiative designed by and for students and postdoctoral fellows. The program aims to establish connections that support and foster positive day-to-day work and life experiences at TRIUMF (Buddy Stream) and/or build relationships with more experienced and senior members of our organization to learn new skills and increase networking opportunities (Academic Mentorship Stream). Depends on the program they are in, students participating in the Early Career Researcher Mentorship Program will have an opportunity to choose to work with either a buddy, an academic mentor, or both. All streams of the pilot program will operate around regularly scheduled, open-format discussions held between mentors and mentees.
If you are interested in participating as a mentee for one or both streams, submit your application here: Early Career Researcher Mentorship Program Application Form for Mentees<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EDUFwrOceUai049ELgO1hyIeZ7ykX61Gj3A1tJ55FlBUQTJBR1JGNDZQQTRGVUU0TkI4N0s5QkRRNS4u>
Become a Buddy!
If you are a senior graduate student or postdoctoral fellow who has been at TRIUMF for at least one year, consider becoming a Buddy! Buddies help new students settle in, learn about and integrate within the lab’s culture and community, and serve as students’ first point of contact for questions related to processes, community, and day-to-day life at TRIUMF.
If you want to become a Buddy, submit your application here: Early Career Mentorship Program Application Form for Buddies<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EDUFwrOceUai049ELgO1hyIeZ7ykX61Gj3A1tJ55FlBUN01VU1VJVFIwUkZROVY2U1ZZUlNMUkNaRS4u>
Become an Academic Mentor!
If you are a researcher, Department head or hold any senior position in the lab, consider becoming an Academic mentor! Academic mentors are instrumental in helping students and postdoctoral fellows navigate their career choices and build a professional network. You will be asked to meet with your mentee(s) regularly and offer constructive feedback on any academic challenges they might have.
If you want to become a Buddy, submit your application here: Early Career Mentorship Program Application Form for Academic Mentors<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=EDUFwrOceUai049ELgO1hyIeZ7ykX61Gj3A1tJ55FlBUOTZGTU5CNkNXOFo0Q1RHRzJIVDcyVDZCMC4u>
The application deadline for both volunteer mentors and mentees is April 24, 2024. As this is a pilot initiative, the number of participants is currently limited to 20. Selected participants will be matched with their mentors and notified via email. The program will kick off with an orientation session in the first week of May and will continue for six months. Some remuneration will be provided for mentorship lunches and/or coffees.
We are incredibly excited to launch this new Mentorship Program at TRIUMF and are available to answer any questions you might have, as mentees or mentors. Let’s enhance our portfolio of student and staff development together, so that everyone is better positioned to succeed in an inclusive and dynamic environment such as ours!
If you have questions or feedback, please reach out to Gabby, Ben, or Monika via email or Teams.
Regards,
Gabby, Ben, and Monika
