In the next session of our journal club (monday July 4th at noon board
room), I'd like to present the following paper:
"The Thorium Molten Salt Reactor: Moving on from the MSBR"
by L. Mathieu, D. Heuer, R. Brissot, C. Le Brun, E. Liatard, J.M.
Loiseaux, O. Méplan, E. Merle-Lucotte, A. Nuttin, J. Wilson, C.
Garzenne, D. Lecarpentier, E. Walle, the GEDEPEON Collaboration
http://www.arxiv.org/abs/nucl-ex/0506004
It presents the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (a type of nuclear power
plant) within the 4th generation of nuclear reactors. An international
forum has established the goals that this new generation of reactors
should meet in order to ease its use as an alternative to fossil fuel
power plants:
- enhanced safety
- reduced waste generation
- effective use of the fuel (enhanced burnup)
- preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons
- improved economic competitiveness
- ...
The advantages and drawbacks of the TMSR with regards to those goals are
presented.
