Slashdot are discussing the latest data loss incident at
http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/09/10/11/0335210/Server-Failure-Destroys-Sidekick-Users-Backup-Data

Among general discussion of data backups and business practices at instututions
involved in the data loss, my attention was grabbed by one comment asking

"if all data is lost, where is their announcement about restoring user data
from last month's backup tapes?".

Surely, short of a major fire or flood, it is not so easy
to "lose all data" from backup *tapes*?
