Although it is not S.L., an openSUSE system with dated Intel
graphics and (new) xorg-x11 7.6-43 runs glxgears fine, with
but a frame rate equal to the display refresh rate.

OK, another running S.L.5 with old intel graphics, has
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.1.1-48.16.el5_7.5.i386 ("7.5")
and
xorg-x11-server-utils-7.1-5
and runs glxgears with ridiculously hige frames per second,
but does display a warns:
3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
