I have updated the page on trmail, 
https://trmail.triumf.ca/internal/ldap-set.html (linked fom "how to set up 
SMTP"), which was not only out-of-date but gave the wrong port.

For ldapsearch, the following work:
$ ldapsearch -x  -H ldaps://misldap1.triumf.ca -b dc=triumf,dc=ca -LLL cn=\*foobar\* mail cn
$ ldapsearch -x  -H ldaps://trmail.triumf.ca -b o=triumf -LLL cn=\*foobar\* mail cn

Access to UBC LDAP, which used to work, apparently now requires the UBC 
vpn according to 
http://www.it.ubc.ca/service_catalogue/internet_telephone/directory/LDAPsetup

I can't get that to work right now, but that may just be finger trouble. 
If someone has a working config and search terms, please let me know.
