el6 (SL6.7) is too out of date for this. Yes, you can kludge it (per above), but the world has moved on.
I would say for modern compilers, use Ubuntu or el7 (CentOS 7).
I would not recommend el7 (CentOS 7) for your personal desktop (yet), but it looks okey
to run on a special software development machine.
For a test, both the computing group (kel) and the daq group (me) have el7 machines where you can login and try things.
