Title: Ups and Downs of Nuclear Isomers
Abstract: Isomers are metastable states of atomic nuclei with excitation energies typically ranging from keV to MeV. Their existence depends, primarily, on angular momentum quantum numbers.
>From early days, isomers have provided key information for models of nuclear structure, and they can play an important role in the understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis scenarios. With radioactive beams, isomers offer several novel opportunities.
After some general and historical comments, three current issues relating to isomers will be discussed:
(i) Hf-178 and the possibility of contolled energy release;
(ii) Ta-180 and its survival in stars; and
(iii) isomers predicted in neutron-rich A~180-190 nuclei.
Stimulants available at 13:45.
