Title: The Quantum: still crazy after all these years
Abstract: Physicists use quantum mechanics every day but cannot agree about
what it is telling us about nature, and indeed reality itself.
Despite this, quantum mechanics is without doubt the single most important
scientific theory of the past century. Its formalism is beautiful, and its
predictions have been tested and verified for three quarters of a century.
So why does it still cause headaches?
This talk is aimed primarily at non-physicists but hopefully even
physicists will find it fun. It is based on a newly published book
(Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed) and will be a whirlwind tour
of the subject from its origins to the exciting 21st century prospects of
quantum technology such as quantum computing and teleportation. Along the
way, some of the weirder conclusions forced upon us by the theory are
explored, such as the two-slit experiment, non-locailty and entanglement.
