Title:     Development and Applications of the Gas Electron Multiplier

Abstract: The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM), introduced by the author several years ago, is finding numerous applications in detectors for particle physics, astrophysics and biomedical research. After a brief summary of the major operating characteristics and recent developments, I will describe several projects psesently operational or under development making use of the GEM technology, namely the COMPASS high rate tracker, the improved readout of Time Projection Chambers, the detection and imaging of UV photons.
