Title: Self Organization Phenomena in Particle Beams: how to use them to build an X-ray laser, and how to avoid them to buld a linear collider

Abstract: A beam of charged particles is a system in a non-equilibrium state. In cases of high intensity beams there are many types of collective instabilities that can drive the system away from the initial state. Some instabilities can be seen as "self organizing" phenomena, leading to states exhibiting a high level of order and with interesting physical properties. By selecting proper initial beam conditions we can control the evolution of the beam towards one of the "self organized" states. An example is the free-electron laser instability, which can be used to develop an X-ray laser -like the 0.1 nm LCLS- that will make possible in the near future some totally new experiments in physics, chemistry and biology. The development of the LCLS is pushing the physics of high brightness electron beams to a new frontier, that will also benefit the development of electron-positron linear colliders and other accelerators.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
